LAKE TAHOE DID YOU KNOW?
About 1,400,000 tons of water evaporate from the surface of Lake Tahoe daily, dropping the lake level about one-tenth of an inch.
If Lake Tahoe's water dispersed through the state of California it would cover the entire state in 14-1/2 inches of water.
There are 63 tributaries draining into Lake Tahoe and only one primary outflow at the Truckee River in Tahoe City. The Tahoe City Dam controls the level at this opening, but only the top 6 feet of the lake.
Lake Tahoe is the 2nd deepest lake in the U.S. and the twelfth deepest lake in the world.
Over the last 34+ years, Tahoe has lost up to 64% of its historic clarity due to increased pollution.
The Lake temperature, at the surface, during July and August can reach up to 68 degrees and the shallow shoreline areas can get even warmer. In colder months, the surface temperature usually ranges from 39 to 41 degrees.
In 1960 the Winter Olympics were held at Squaw Valley.
Lake Tahoe never freezes.
Lake Tahoe has its own Coast Guard.
A popular trail in the Tahoe area is the Tahoe Rim Trail, a 165 mile trail that circumnavigates the lake.
TAHOE CITY
Tahoe City is one of the four largest Lake Tahoe communities.
Tahoe City is home to the only Lake Tahoe outlet, the Truckee River, which flows northeast to Pyramid Lake.
